there is enough treachery, hatred violence absurdity in the average
human being to supply any given army on any given day

and the best at murder are those who preach against it
and the best at hate are those who preach love
and the best at war finally are those who preach peace

those who preach god, need god
those who preach peace do not have peace
those who preach peace do not have love

beware the preachers
beware the knowers
beware those who are always reading books
beware those who either detest poverty
or are proud of it
beware those quick to praise
for they need praise in return
beware those who are quick to censor
they are afraid of what they do not know
beware those who seek constant crowds for
they are nothing alone
beware the average man the average woman
beware their love, their love is average
seeks average

but there is genius in their hatred
there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you
to kill anybody
not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their own
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect

like a shining diamond
like a knife
like a mountain
like a tiger
like hemlock

their finest art

School Spirit September 16, 2010

Received my college alumni magazine, Spiritus in the mail today. Usually I just skim through it with no real avid interest. Just to see if anyone I knew or any name I vaguely recognize from 20 years ago is in it.

In this issue there was a story about the school being used as part of a movie set. Something called LOL, with Demi Moore and Miley Cyrus was being filmed in the Chemistry building. It sparked a bit of interest; not really sure why. Since graduating, I’ve only gone back once. That was to surprise friends I worked with in the Residence Life office, not for some sense of nostalgia for the “good old days”.

I suppose you could say I don’t have a sense of school spirit since I never joined any associations, don’t go back for Homecoming, and I don’t necessarily swell with pride if I happen to hear about the Titans winning a game. I’ll say “oh – I went there” but it’s not that big a deal. I mean, it was over 20 years ago. (God, when the hell did I get this freakin’ old (adult))

It’s kind of the same with my high school – another place that, coincidentally, was used as part of a movie set. A movie called Voices was filmed there with Michael Ontkean (The Rookies, Twin Peaks) and Amy Irving (Carrie, Yentl). But, anyway -I’ve never gone back there, and don’t really participate in any alumni stuff.

It’s not that I had bad experiences at either institution. On the contrary they were both crucial in helping me learn, and grow and discover different facets of myself. But – I don’t know – I just don’t “connect” with the whole alma mater, camaraderie aspect of it all. Always the standoffish hermit, and never one to “join in” (which makes this whole Twitter/Facebook/blogging thing kind of a trip in itself) yet yearning to feel connected or known, yet backing away from anyone’s efforts to delve deeper.

I don’t know. I’m just weird that way.
