Cover Battle – “Uprising” August 23, 2013
The original song, by Muse, is anthemic. And revolutionary. And inspirational, motivational, defiant and battle-ready. It gets you pumped up for action and ready to strike out against the injustices surrounding you and to fight back your oppressors. And it’s a damn good song. I get a kick out of how the video is basically demented animatronic zombie teddy bears destroying a post-apocalyptic toy town like Godzilla decimating Tokyo.
The shredded guitar work brings the anarchy while the incessant drum beat spurs you on to take up the cause.
I think I found the first cover by looking up a snippet of song I heard in a beer commercial then clicking on other links under the name of the artist, Andra Day. This cover is just Andra and the guitarist, in a room, with a couple of microphones. Her song, like her style, is a very jazz-like take on a decidedly modern song. I like her strong vocals and she has a really lovely range to her voice. And bonus – she seems like a really nice person. I left a comment on her YouTube page and posted the video on Twitter and she was kind enough to reach out and thank me for it. Very sweet.
The third video is from a young violinist named Grace Youn. No vocals, just Grace in a split screen duet (with herself). It’s just one of the many cool things you discover when you go searching for covers on YouTube. Her bio says she’s 21 but she looks 13, and she’s extremely talented. Currently studying for her Masters of Music degree, she maintains the powerful urgency of the original piece.

Seriously?!?! October 27, 2011
Are you serious with the crap? Is this the political version of “I know you are, but what am I”? Next they’re gonna try to grab Obama’s hand, slap him and say “Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself?” Rethuglicans have been “preying on ‘fear, envy & resentment'” and spurring on divisiveness since before Obama got into office!!!
