20 Successful Failures (via Because you love it too!) September 21, 2011

20 Successful Failures “Who you are today does not equate to who you will be tomorrow.” “To experience great success, you must experience great failure” “The greatest successes are born from failure” A much respected friend of mine once told me. Don’t be afraid of failures. People go through multiple failures before achieving success. If you’re too afraid to achieve your first failure, then you’re too afraid to achieve success. “Each failure brings you one step closer … Read More

How’s your Post a Day/Post a Week progress coming along? January 31, 2011

I’m really into the idea of this challenge. I could have signed up for the “Post a Week” portion, but I decided to go for glory (and some semblance of consistency) and go for “Post a Day”. Yay, me.

Now, have I posted everyday? No. A couple of weeks ago I missed 1 or 2 days here and there. One day I posted about not having anything to post about. Last week I didn’t post at all. Actually I hardly went online at all. I don’t think I hit Twitter for 3 or 4 days; after that it was once or twice – just popping in to say hello.

I just felt the need to disconnect a bit. I did miss everybody I usually read, tweet and interact with. Sent a couple of DM’s to some friends. I posted some stuff on Facebook, though. More than I normally do. I kind of liked the idea of throwing it out there without having to engage with anyone. Extreme hermit tendencies creeping in again.

Also I really need to focus on some other stuff. Barely posted anything on the here either. I still love the blog, but some of it is really time-consuming. There are probably easier ways to do some of the stuff I do, but I’m too lazy to formally learn how. Like right now, there’s a funny little thing that (hopefully) I’ll be able to put up in a couple of days. But the idea kind of expanded into something I’ve never really done before. It’s getting a bit convoluted, but I’m playing with programs on the computer I’ve never had a need for, so it’s still interesting. I think I actually need to write a script for it and figure out a storyboard (!). I could just let it go because it seems like it’s gonna be a lot of work, but discovering new ways of doing stuff and expressing myself can be fun and exciting. Can’t wait to see what comes of it.

Plinky/PostADay2011 prompt: Why did you start? January 13, 2011

This is my “About” page:

And this was my first post:

So the question for today’s inspiration is “Why did you start?”. Well, all the cool kids were doing it so I figured why not?

I have all this stuff swirling around in my brain and I had started to get into the whole Twitter thing and gradually worked my way up to putting myself out there a bit more. It’s a way of clearing out the cobwebs. I enjoy the internet and there’s always some sort of wackiness that holds my interest so I wanted to put it all in one place and share it. If people like it great. If not, oh well, at least I have a great place that entertains me.

Now I just have to figure out how someone will pay me to waste time on the web and the twitters, procrastinate, eat and post silliness.

When I was looking for some information on Ruby Bridges awhile back I went to the official NAACP website. The first thing that came up on the home page was a link to a petition to pardon the Scott sisters. The short story was that the Gladys and Jamie Scott, though staunchly proclaiming their innocence, received life sentences for a robbery that amount to $11.

Sometimes I just randomly sign up for stuff online, but I didn’t for this. My initial thought was there had to have been a death involved, or why the life sentences. After reading several articles and looking into the history it seems to be a colossal failure of the American system of “justice”.

The basic facts are:

  • The Scott sisters accepted a ride with a couple of young friends then went about their business
  • The friends were later robbed at gunpoint by some underage boys with shotguns, getting about $11
  • The robbers, in a plea deal, implicated the Scott sisters
  • Neither sister had a prior criminal record
  • Prosecutors tried to paint them as the masterminds of the robbery – influencing the minors to commit the crime
  • Both sisters were sentenced to life imprisonment
  • The judge in the case has a long history of racist rulings (he pardoned the accused killer of Chaney, Schwerner & Goodman)

If that weren’t enough, the sisters have suffered a variety of indignities in prison. Jamie has gone into severe kidney failure due to years of corporate-controlled prison healthcare (infections, delays in hospital transportation, cancelled dialysis treatments, capricious solitary confinement).

The NAACP and a variety of people have been working years to have the sisters pardoned. Today it was announced that the sisters would be granted early parole on the condition that Gladys donate a kidney to Jamie.

Ambassador Gabriel Byrne and ‘Brand Ireland’ … No thanks (via Kevin Doyle’s Weblog) October 15, 2010

I woke up this morning to a sweetly sick interview on Morning Ireland with the actor Gabriel Byrne.  I don't know if this is official or not but Gabriel is Ireland's new cultural ambassador.  Maybe that's just for the day that's in it – St Patrick's Day – but my impression is is that it is for much longer and is part of an initiative to 'sell' Ireland abroad particularly using its artistic and cultural achievements.   In the interview, such terms … Read More
